Difference Between EST (Eastern Time Zone) and MST (Mountain Standard Time)

Main Difference

EST is an abbreviation of Eastern Time Zone which is also commonly known as (NAEST) means North American Eastern Standard Time whereas MST stands for Mountain Standard Time (MST). These time zones are observed in the United States of America along with the other standard nine time zones. The main difference between MST and EST is that Eastern Time Zone (EST) is two hours ahead of Mountain Time Zone (MZT). For example, if Eastern Standard Time (EST) is 15:45 then Mountain Standard Time (MST) is 17:45.

What is EST?

The eastern standard time zone incorporates that part of the United States that is west of 67[deg]30[sec] W. longitude and east of the limit line portrayed in Sec. 71.5, and incorporates the majority of the State of Maine, however, does exclude any part of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The Eastern Time Zone incorporates the area of West Virginia, Vermont, Virginia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland, part of Indiana, Connecticut, Rhode Island, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Delaware, New York, Georgia, part of Tennessee, Ohio, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maine, part of Kentucky, Florida and Maryland.

What is MST?

Mountain Standard Time which is an abbreviation for (MST) is also commonly termed as Mountain Time (MT) and North American Mountain Standard Time (MST) is actually seven hours behind UTC which stands for Coordinated Universal Time. In North America, people use this time zone during standard time. MST is also called as Mountain Time Zone (MTZ). The states of North America Standard Time (MST) during winter season include Wyoming, Utah, Texas, South Dakota, New Mexico, Oregon, Nebraska, Montana, Kansas, Idaho, Colorado, and Arizona. There are few Canadian states as well that use MST during the winter season which include Lloydminster, Nunavut, Northwest Territories, British Columbia, and Alberta. Some Mexican states that use MST also in winter include Sinaloa, Nayarit, Chihuahua, and Baja California Sur. Sonora is a Mexican state that uses MST throughout the year. Arizona state in North America and some places in British Columbia in Canada also uses MST all the year.

Key Differences

  1. EST is used in Coordinated Universal Time – 4 or Coordinated Universal Time – 5 whereas MST is used in Coordinated Universal Time – 6 or Coordinated Universal Time – 7.
  2. A few states follow EST including Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey whereas some other states including Arizona, Kansas, Texas and Utah follow the Mountain Standard Time.
  3. EST depends on the mean sun based time of the 75th meridian west of the Greenwich Observatory whereas MST depends on the mean sun based time of the 105th meridian west of the Greenwich Observatory.
  4. EST is the true time of the USA in light of the fact that the capital is situated in this time zone whereas MST is definitely not.
