There are two types of storage in computer and laptops, first is internal storage (which can be internal hard disk or flash drive) and second is external storage (which can be external hard disk, pen drive or USB. Both flash and pen drive are used for storage and transfer of data. A flash drive is a small electronic chip which is used as a medium of data storage and transfer from one computer/laptop to another computer/laptop while a Pen drive is a small drive which is used to storage and transfer of data between multiple system.
What is Flash Drive?
A flash drive is a small electronic chip which is used as a medium of data storage and transfer from one computer/laptop to another computer/laptop. Data can be of any type. You can store and share all kind of data like images, videos, music, documents, files, presentation and software. There is no more need of CDs or floppy drives. You can carry it with you in your pocket. It is also called thumb drive due to its small size.
What is Pen Drive?
Pen drive is a small drive which is used to storage and transfer of data between multiple system. In April 1999, Amir Ban, Dov Moran and Oron Organ introduced the pen drive. If your system has USB port, you can use it very easily. 4GB to 32GB size pen drive are commonly used. It replaced the floppy drive and is much more convenient and beneficial than floppy drive. Any type of file or data, which you saved on your system can be easily stored on pen drive. It gain huge popularity because backing of data has become possible due to pen drive. In start its storage capacity was 8 MB, which is now upgraded up to 1 TB by January 2013.
- Flash drive is a wider term than pen drive. Flash drive can be pen or USB drive. For example your memory card is a kind of flash drive. Even a chip in pen drive is a flash drive.
- Flash drive has multiple uses. You can use it externally as well as internally. In latest laptop, tablets and notebooks instead of hard disk flash drive is being used. While pen drive are always used externally. Moreover it required a USB port to work.
- Often pen drive is manufactured according fixed P/E cycles (program erase cycles). When your pen drive achieves this limit it will become automatically useless. Integrated flash drive has no such problem because in some computer systems it is working in place of hard disk.
- Computer with low specification (hard disk, RAM and processor) takes long time to handle the pen drive same is the situation of external flash drive. While internal flash drive has no such problem. It works as a normal hard disk works.
