Main Difference

There are no significant differences in the leadership styles. Fact is that all organizations or institutes regardless of their field, have different norms, policies and cultures that will end up shaping different leaders. Among lot of leadership styles, political leadership and military leadership are also important to discuss.

What is Political Leadership?

Political leadership refers to a person who is the head of a political party involved in making public policy and influencing them. Political leadership is a wide term and people who already hold decision making positions in government are also include in the circle of political leadership. Ethical and cultural character with followers and nation, personality and traits are the major factors that define the political leadership. In democratic state or countries, political leadership is above the military, legal, organizational, religious and ideological leadership. Some of the scholars have view point that political leadership is a whole leadership that overlaps other higher levels of leaderships.

What is Military Leadership?

Military leadership refers to the senior military leaders like admirals, generals, air marshals and those military leaders with strategic influence. It is a process of influencing others to complete the assigned task by providing relevant direction and purpose. Military leader has the authority according to law and he can exercise the same over subordinates according to rank or position. Military leadership is responsible for the accomplishment of the defense mission and the welfare of the soldiers. He is liable to be loyal, selfless and dutiful to the nation, the military and the unit.

Key Differences

  1. Political leadership come into power by election process and military leadership come into position through a complete promotion process of the military.
  2. Political leadership is elected by the people and major military leadership positions are mostly decided by the prime minister or president.
  3. Political leader ship overlaps the all higher leadership such as military leadership, legal leadership, religious leadership, etc. So, military leaderships come under the umbrella of political leadership.
  4. Political leadership is liable for the welfare of society while military leadership is liable to make the defense of country as strong as possible.
