Difference Between Step Brother and Half Brother

Primary Difference

The family is one of the most important part of someone’s life. It is a gathering where a person starts their life, lives with them, learns and grows up according to the norms and traditions of its family. This part of someone’s life is precious to them and everyone gives importance to family over others. A normal family usually consists of a mother, father, and siblings. The last one is defined as one or two more people who share one or two common parents with you. A male sibling is called brother while a female sibling is called sister and they grow up together, provided by the family and develop emotional bonds between them. There is no one type of siblings, though, for example, there are two types in case of brothers which are known as Step Brother and Half Brother which are different from each other and will be discussed in this paragraph to give a clearer idea of how they differ from each other. The definition of a step brother is that your sibling is not related to you in terms of blood, this is the case in which one of your parents gets married to another person and have a son or daughter which are related to you by law but not by blood. The word step came into the fold because another person steps into your life willingly or unwillingly. In most countries, this brother is not regarded as your real brother but in some countries they are. The definition of half-brother is relatively different. It is the case in which you have one common parent be it, father or mother. This is the case in which one of the parents is the same and the brother is related to you by the blood of that parent. In the law of most countries, a half-brother is usually considered a full brother. Another difference between the two is that your step brother does not always have the right over the property left by parents while a half-brother keeps equal right by law since they are not considered different from you. There are other ways of showing the difference as well but a brief explanation of both these types of family relation will be given in the next two paragraphs while differences, in a nutshell, will be given at the end of this article to clarify how they differ.

Definition of Step Brother

In simple words, a step brother does not have any blood relationship with you but is only related to you because both or one of your parent got married to another person who does not have any relation to you. The reason of this marriage can be anything such as divorce, death, and other reasons but if in such a case these people are living together as a family then that step brother may or may not be considered as your real brother according to the norms of society but that is not the case according to law. There are other cases that your step brother is living away from you and you get to see them occasionally, but one thing is for sure that both do not have any right to each other’s property. There are fewer chances that they have good relations in this case especially if they got to know each other at a later stage in life. The simplest way of telling what it means is that two brothers who are related to each other because of marriage are known as step brothers.

Definition of Half Brother

This case is different from the step brother because of one particular reason. A half-brother is your sibling because they are related to you because one of your parents married another person, in this way the brother will become related to you by blood because you are sharing the blood of one person from your mother or father at least. There is very less biological difference between the two and the DNA are almost similar. Therefore, they are considered the same in law so that monetary matters can be solved easily but there is no reason to suggest that they are real brothers. In most societies, they are told to be real brothers so that they can bond with each other and less discontentment between them exists. This happens when one of your father or mother dies and the other marries another person. You may or may not live with your half-brother but you know about that person most of the times. In simple words, a half-brother is the one which is related 50% to you by blood.
