Transgender

This is a term which has become a lot common over the past few years and is associated with the person or group of people who do not agree to their original gender and are more interested in the ways and actions of the other gender. These are people whose gender identity is not as same as how they were born and can include people who may or may not be fully a male or female. This term has nothing to do with how people express themselves but is only restricted to defining such people. This type also has another name which is transsexual, but that is only applied to people who want to change their gender after medically being operated. It is also used for shemale or individuals who belong to the third gender which is a combination of the first two. They do not have to have a particular sexual orientation and can belong to any class such as homo, hetero, bi and asexual. The amount of freedom or authenticity which a person feels when they belong to this category and accept their original identity is called transgender congruence. Moving on to the social aspect, these types of people face discriminations in all fields of life and do not have an equal place as compared to other population in the society. To make it simpler, a man who considers himself to be a woman is known as trans man while a female who believes herself to have traits of men is known as trans woman.

Transvestite

This is a term which is specifically used for people who like to dress up like the opposite sex. It can be said that the word is exclusive to men who like to dress up like a woman because most female already wear clothes which are common among male. People who belong to this category are the ones who are able to express themselves, and therefore transvestite is not just a word defining a type but also the way of life for some people. This name is taken from the Latin language with the word trans meaning across and vestire meaning clothes. From transferring to the German language and coming into English later in the 1920’s this word has evolved to the current form. This is not a phenomenon which is new for people since this practice has been going on for centuries and therefore it is not considered odd for a female to dress up like a man, but there are some reservations when it comes to men dressing up as women. The term cross-dresser is the one which is more respectable and is frequently used. In the 1970’s when people who used to act this way started feeling odd about the main word, there was a need to describe such people and this heterosexual male who wore traditionally feminine clothes were categorized this way. It is also a part of religion in some cases like in Hinduism, where some male devotees dress up like women and pray to Radha as an act of devotion towards her.
