Difference Between Logical Possibility vs. Metaphysical Possibility

Main Difference

The widest kind of possibility is usually given the name of Logical possibility. You are able to say a proposition is logically possible in the situation when there is no logical disagreement is present for making it to be untrue. You can say a statement logically possible such as “Michel is a bachelor” even though it is false in real. But any statement such as “Michel is a married bachelor” is logically impossible as a contradiction is present in this statement. Every person is either a bachelor or married. He/she can’t be married and bachelor at the same time. The last preposition is therefore said to be logically self-contradictory. The possibility which is either equitant or narrow than the logical possibility is called Metaphysical possibility. The statement “Water is H2O” is metaphysically compulsory because the hydrogen and oxygen are the vital parts of water but on the other hand, not logically necessary.

What is Logical Possibility?

Among the four types of subjective possibility, the logical possibility is the one that is most widely discussed due to its wide-ranging explanations. In order to check any statement that whether it is logically possible or not, you need to have examine that there are no contradictions for it to be factual. When you verify any statement like “George is sickly”, you will see that it is logically possible. Both the words of “George” and “sickly” are not contradicting each other. If the statement itself show contradiction like “George is healthy sick” then it is said to be logically untrue. Here both the words of “healthy” and “sick” are contradicting.

What is Metaphysical Possibility?

When you compare the Metaphysical possibility with the logical one, you will come to know that the Metaphysical possibility is a little bit narrower. A statement is Metaphysical possible which may be seen as logical impossible for example “Salt is NaCl”. But on the other side, it is metaphysically possible seeing that the salt is really a compound of Sodium (Na) and Chloride (Cl) known as NaCl.

Key Differences

  1. For the sake of considering a statement to be logically possible, there should be no contradicting word/s is present in that statement. On the contrary, a statement is sad to be metaphysically possible in the situation when it tells the accurate composition of the object.
  2. There is no condition that a logically possible proposition should be metaphysically possible and as a consequence, a metaphysically possible statement can be logically not possible in some cases.
