LAN vs. VLAN: What's the Difference?

Key Difference

The difference between LAN and VLAN is that LAN is local area network that can only cover a small area that works on single broadcast whereas VLAN is a virtual local area network that works on multiple broadcasts.

LAN vs. VLAN

The computer system work with a network that connects and communicate, communication is one of the main purposes of the computer system. Many systems for the purpose of communication has been made. There is three main and most important network that are LAN, MAN and WAN. There is a lot of difference between LAN, MAN and WAN. LAN is local area network that can only cover a small area; MAN is metropolitan area network that covers more area than LAN whereas WAN is wide area network that covers a large area as compared to LAN and MAN. LAN is a local area network that links network devices. Local area network is for personal computers, for example, there is an office, and there are many computers these computers are lined, and the communication is done using a Local area network. MAN is metropolitan area network; this network covers a large area as compared to LAN that is local area network. Local area network cover one office and Metropolitan area network cover more than one office. Two more computers that are apart for each other can be connected using MAN. VLAN is a virtual local area network that works on multiple broadcasts. VLAN was introduced to enhance the capabilities of LAN. If we talk about the main difference, then the main difference between LAN and VLAN is that LAN is local area network that can only cover a small area that works on single broadcast whereas VLAN is virtual local area network that works on multiple broadcast.  LAN is a local area network that links network devices. Local area network is for personal computers, for example, there is an office, and there are many computers these computers are lined, and the communication is done using a Local area network. VLAN is a virtual local area network that is a logical separation of LAN. VLAN is a virtual local area network that works on multiple broadcasts. The specific thing about LAN is that is the LAN segment constructed in the LAN that can be spanned and contracted according to the requirement of the user. Single broadcast domain generates more bandwidth then LAN. The need for multiple different switches for the various subnetworks of an organization. For the implementation of VLAN, switches are used. Security is provided by restricting the broadcast to every port that is present in VLAN.  The amount of flexibility is much more in VLAN as compared to LAN. The workstations that are connected using LAN can share data, and this network is connected with wires.  The rate of transfer of data using of local area network is very fast. But the only problem is that the limitation is very limited. LAN can only cover a small geographical area, and it is owned by one person. LAN can use in office, building, home, schools and hospitals. One of the biggest advantage of LAN it is very easy to make and maintain. Twisted pair cable and coaxial cable is used in the making of Local area network.

 What is LAN?

LAN is a local area network that links network devices. Local area network is for personal computers, for example, there is an office, and there are many computers these computers are lined, and the communication is done using a Local area network. MAN is metropolitan area network; this network covers a large area as compared to LAN that is local area network. Local area network cover one office and Metropolitan area network cover more than one office. Two more computers that are apart for each other can be connected using MAN. MAN can also be used to network in more than one city. MAN cover a large geographical area and is ISP that is an internet service provider. It is easy to maintain MAN but is difficult as compared to LAN. MAN is costly as compared to LAN, LAN is not handled by a single organization. The transfer rate is moderate but slow as compared to LAN. WAN is wide area network that is a computer network that is most widely used and is cover the large geographical area. A WAN is wide area network that could be a connection of LAN connecting to other LAN’s via phones and radio waves. MAN or LAN can be privately owned, but WAN cannot be privately owned because it is very wide. PSTN or Satellite link is communication medium. The chances of errors are more is wide and because it covers a large area.

What is VLAN?

VLAN is virtual local area network that is logical separation of LAN. VLAN is virtual local area network that work on multiple broadcast. The specific thing about LAN is that is the LAN segment constructed in the LAN that can be spanned and contracted according to the requirement of user. Single broadcast domain generates more bandwidth then LAN. The need for multiple different switches for the various subnetworks of an organization. For the implementation of VLAN switches are used. Security is provided by restricting the broadcast to every port that is present in VLAN.  The amount of flexibility is much more in VLAN as compared to LAN.

Key Differences

  1. Full form of LAN is local area network whereas the Full form of VLAN is virtually local area network.
  2. LAN is local area network that can only cover a small area that works on single broadcast whereas VLAN is a virtual local area network that works on multiple broadcast.
  3. The latency of LAN is high whereas the Latency of VLAN is low.
  4. Cost of LAN is high as compared to VLAN whereas Cost of VLAN is low as compared to LAN.
